Mars Signs and Attraction: How You Pursue What You Want

Mars is the planet of drive. Where Venus describes what you find attractive, Mars describes what you do about it — how you pursue, how you assert yourself, and what happens when you are angry.

It takes about two years to circle the zodiac, spending roughly six or seven weeks in each sign, so Mars is not tied to your Sun sign the way Venus is. Find yours on your natal chart.

What Mars governs

Three things that turn out to be the same thing.

How you pursue. Whether you approach directly, obliquely, patiently or not at all.

How you fight. Your instinct in conflict — confront, withdraw, negotiate, wait.

Where your energy goes. Mars describes what you will actually get out of bed for, which is not always what you say you want.

These sit together because they are all expressions of a single function: the will, and the manner in which it moves. A Mars that pursues obliquely also fights obliquely.

Mars through the twelve signs

Mars in Aries is Mars at home. Direct, fast, physical. Pursues immediately and without strategy. Anger is instant, loud and genuinely finished within the hour — a pattern others frequently misread as ongoing.

Mars in Taurus pursues slowly and does not stop. Rarely provoked; immovable once it is. The anger takes a long time to arrive and a very long time to leave.

Mars in Gemini pursues through words. Argues well, thinks on its feet, and can talk its way into or out of most things. Energy is mental rather than physical, and scatters easily across too many fronts.

Mars in Cancer pursues indirectly. Approaches sideways, protects rather than attacks, and withdraws instead of confronting. Anger comes out as sulking or as fierce defence of someone else — this Mars will fight for you more readily than for itself.

Mars in Leo pursues with confidence and display. Wants the pursuit to be noticed. Anger is dramatic, brief, and largely about wounded pride rather than the stated issue.

Mars in Virgo pursues through competence. Wins by being better prepared. Anger is precise and critical — it names exactly what is wrong, which is more wounding than shouting.

Mars in Libra pursues through charm and negotiation. Genuinely dislikes conflict and will avoid it past the point of usefulness. Anger arrives late, indirectly, and often as cold politeness.

Mars in Scorpio pursues with total focus and infinite patience. Traditional ruler of the sign, so Mars is strong here. Does not forget and does not act until the moment is right. Anger is controlled, quiet and long-lived.

Mars in Sagittarius pursues enthusiastically and in several directions. Argues on principle and enjoys it. Anger is blunt, honest and over quickly, and this Mars is often surprised that its honesty landed as an insult.

Mars in Capricorn is Mars at its most effective. Pursues strategically, patiently, over years if required. Anger is cold and controlled, expressed as withdrawal of approval rather than confrontation.

Mars in Aquarius pursues unpredictably and on its own terms. Detached in conflict, argues from principle rather than feeling. Anger appears as sudden distance — the connection is simply cut, which the other person experiences as disproportionate.

Mars in Pisces pursues obliquely or not at all. Struggles to state a want directly and often gets what it wants through indirect means. Anger is difficult to express and turns inward, or comes out as guilt applied to someone else.

The two ruling positions

Mars rules Aries and, traditionally, Scorpio — which is why those two placements behave so differently and are both described as strong.

Mars in Aries is force applied immediately. Mars in Scorpio is the same force applied with patience and concealment. Aries takes the hill; Scorpio waits until the hill is undefended. Both get there.

Mars is considered weakest in Cancer and Libra, where the sign’s instinct contradicts the planet’s function — Cancer’s indirectness and Libra’s aversion to conflict both work against straightforward assertion. In practice these placements simply pursue by other means, and they are often underestimated because of it.

Mars and anger

Worth separating out, because this is where Mars is most useful practically.

Fire Mars — Aries, Leo, Sagittarius — expresses anger immediately and forgets it. The intensity is real and the duration is short. Other elements consistently overestimate how long it will last.

Earth Mars — Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn — is slow to anger and holds it. The response is controlled and often practical: consequences rather than confrontation.

Air Mars — Gemini, Libra, Aquarius — argues rather than fights. It wants the disagreement conducted in words and finds emotional intensity in conflict genuinely unfair.

Water Mars — Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces — rarely expresses anger directly. It withdraws, waits, or turns it inward, and the intensity is invisible from outside until it is not.

Most recurring arguments between couples are two Mars signs using incompatible conflict styles. A fire Mars shouting for ninety seconds and considering the matter closed, paired with a water Mars that has gone quiet and will still be processing next week, will have the same fight repeatedly until both recognise what is happening.

Mars in synastry

Between two charts, Mars contacts describe chemistry and friction — often both.

One person’s Mars touching the other’s Venus is the classic attraction signature: one pursues in exactly the manner the other finds appealing.

Mars to Mars in the same element means the two of you fight the same way, which is comfortable. In squared signs it means you fight incompatibly, which is the most common source of ordinary domestic conflict in an otherwise good relationship.

Mars retrograde

Mars turns retrograde for about two and a half months every two years. Born during one, Mars operates internally — the drive is real but does not express outwardly in the expected way.

Natal Mars retrograde often shows up as difficulty with direct confrontation, anger that turns inward before it turns outward, and a pattern of acting decisively only after a long internal build-up. As with any retrograde placement, it is a different route rather than a broken one.

Find your Mars sign on your natal chart and read the description of how it fights, not just how it pursues — that is the half people recognise.
