Fourth House Home and Roots
The fourth house is the foundation — where you come from and where you retreat to. It describes family, home and the emotional base everything else is built on.

What The Fourth House Covers
The fourth house describes home, family, and origins — the private base a life is conducted from, and the conditions someone came out of. It is the most interior part of a chart.
It is angular, sitting at the bottom of the wheel, and its cusp is called the imum coeli. Planets placed here carry weight of a private kind: this house describes what is happening at home rather than what is visible publicly.
Its natural sign is Cancer and its ruler the moon, which supplies its vocabulary of belonging, security, and what a person retreats to once the day is over.
Origins And Foundations
The house is read in two registers at once: the family a person came from, and the home they build afterward. Traditional sources emphasize the first, modern practice the second, and most readings now treat them as continuous rather than separate.
The sign on the cusp describes the character of both. An earth sign suggests stability and a strong attachment to place; a fire sign a household with a good deal of activity in it; an air sign one organized around conversation; a water sign one where atmosphere matters more than arrangement.
Planets here describe what is active in that area. Saturn suggests responsibility carried early; Uranus a household that did not follow a conventional shape; the moon here is at home and describes someone for whom domestic security is central to everything else.
Readings About Family
This is the house where astrology most often overreaches, and the limit is worth stating plainly. A chart describes its subject. It contains no information about a parent, a sibling, or anybody else, and readings that make claims about relatives are asking the system to do something it cannot.
What the fourth house can describe is a person's relationship to their origins — what they took from them, what they rejected, and what they are still negotiating. That question belongs to the chart's subject and is answerable by them.
Where family circumstances were genuinely difficult, a chart is not the place to work through it and offers nothing useful for doing so. That is a matter for a qualified therapist, and nothing here substitutes for one.
The Fourth And Tenth Axis
The fourth sits opposite the tenth, and together they form the vertical axis of a chart — private foundations at the bottom, public standing at the top. It is one of the most legible oppositions in the system.
The tension it describes is recognizable: the demands of a working life against the demands of a household, and the question of which one supplies a person's sense of who they are. Most people negotiate that axis continuously rather than settling it once.
Common Questions
Does the fourth house describe my parents? No. It describes your relationship to your origins, which is a fact about you. A chart carries no information about any other person.
What is the imum coeli? The cusp of the fourth house, the lowest point of the chart, directly opposite the midheaven. It is one of the four angles.
Does it need a birth time? Yes. Like every house, the fourth depends on the ascendant, which changes every two hours. Without a time the house structure cannot be established.
Reading The House In Practice
Three things describe any house: the sign on its cusp, the planets in it, and where the ruler of that sign sits. For the fourth house that produces an account of what home means to somebody and what it is connected to.
A worked example: the fourth house beginning in Aquarius, empty, with Saturn in the eleventh. Home is approached unconventionally and with some detachment, nothing dominates it directly, and the whole area ties to community and long-range commitments — someone whose sense of belonging comes from a chosen group rather than from a family or a building.
The method matters more than the example. Three pieces of information produce a specific reading; a keyword produces something that could apply to anyone.
The End Of The Matter
Traditional sources give the fourth house an additional meaning that has largely dropped out of modern practice: the end of things, sometimes called the end of the matter. It covers how a situation concludes and, in older readings, the later part of a life.
The logic is positional. The fourth is the lowest point of the wheel, where the sun sits at midnight, and the tradition read that as the conclusion of a cycle rather than as its low point.
Older sources extend this to burial and to what remains after somebody dies, which is a register modern astrology has quietly dropped. It is worth recognizing when reading traditional texts, and it is not a claim anybody should take seriously as prediction.
Nothing in this house or any other carries information about anybody's lifespan or health, and older material that suggests otherwise belongs to a period whose assumptions have not survived.
