The Practice of Stepping Back

So how do you actually change this behavior during this period? You start by identifying one specific area where you are currently over-functioning. It might be reminding your partner to take out the recycling, or staying late at the office to double-check a junior employee’s work.

Make a conscious decision to step back from that specific task. Set a boundary with yourself. If the task is unfinished by a certain time, let the natural consequence occur. If the recycling is left inside, let it sit there. If the junior employee makes a minor error, let them face the feedback.

This will feel incredibly uncomfortable. Your mind will race with all the ways things could go wrong. You will feel a strong urge to intervene and just get it done yourself. Acknowledge that physical sensation of anxiety, but resist acting on it. Let the situation remain unresolved. You will likely find that the world survives when you stop managing it. People often rise to the occasion when they are given the space to do so.

Return to that shared digital calendar. The appointment window has closed, and the maintenance remained unscheduled. Your partner realizes their mistake and scrambles to call the company, eventually securing a slot for the following week. The system was unoptimized. The timeline was delayed. But as you watch them handle the phone call and manage the rescheduling, you realize you have no need to send a follow-up email to ensure they remember. You close your laptop and leave the calendar alone, finally allowing someone else to manage their own schedule.
