Making the Decision to Stay

So how do you actually break this cycle during this period? You start by identifying one specific unfinished project. It does not have to be the most important thing in your life. It just needs to be something you have been avoiding because the middle phase feels too tedious.

Make a conscious decision to complete it. If the task is too large, break it down into small, manageable pieces. Do not look at the entire mountain of work. Just look at the next single step. Write one paragraph. Send one email. Make one phone call. Celebrate the small completion, and then immediately move to the next small step.

When you sit down to work on it, you will inevitably hit a moment of intense boredom. Your mind will race with new, more exciting ideas. You will feel a strong physical urge to close the laptop and research something else. Recognize that feeling for what it is. It is just boredom, not intuition.

Sit with the discomfort. Do the budget projections. Make the tedious phone call. Send the follow-up email. You do not have to love the process. You just have to stay in the room until it is finished.

Return to that presentation on your laptop screen. Slide eleven is still waiting for the budget projections. The new software tool you were researching is interesting, but it can wait. You open the spreadsheet, input the numbers, and build out the timeline. It is incredibly dull work, but as you type the final figure, the presentation is finally complete. You close the file, knowing you can finally move on to the next thing without leaving this one behind.
